Cigar-bands have sdorned cigars for more than 150 years. Until World War I they were produced and printed to the hightest quality using the best methods available, with the result that many cigar-bands of the time are genuine works of art. Images depicted on the bands are varied, but specific themes may be distinguished – flowers and foliage, for example, or heraldic ‘charges’, or of course portraits of contemporary rulers and celebrities. This book features nearly 1,800 cigar-bands drawn from the collection of Roger van Reeth, including some of the most beautiful, some of the rarest and some of the oldest. Their presence adds something special to what is already a special publication: the Flavour, perhaps, of a superb Havana cigar.

The chapters in this volume examine various understandings of theories of political resistance and obedience on the part of myriad authors, Catholic as well as Protestant, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. They consider how the Reformation spurred reflections on the concept of resistance, pondering over the circumstances that would call for resistance and that would sanction it, and the agents who could legitimately initiate and manage the deposition of political, religious and royal authorities. From sixteenth-century Spanish readings of the Reformation, to different episodes of active resistance through France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, to the experience of religious exiles in the English colonies in North America, this volume provides an illustrative sample of case studies on, on the one hand, processes of construction of the rhetoric of resistance, and, on the other, instances of actual uprisings.

Five people in the Balkans recall their lives before and during World War II and one unusual woman they all knew in this quietly impressive tale by the leading Slovenian writer. In I Saw Her That Night, the beautiful, headstrong Veronika appears first as a dreamy vision for a captured Serbian cavalryman who hasn’t seen her in seven years, since 1937. Their affair was sparked when her wealthy husband arranged for her riding lessons with the officer. She leaves her spouse and lives in poverty with the horseman on the Bulgarian border but returns to her husband and the new manor he has bought in Slovenia. Veronika’s mother and a live-in housekeeper from the manor each revisit their memories of her and wonder about the night she and her husband disappeared in the company of anti-German partisans. A military doctor who was among the German officers regularly visiting the manor and who once held Veronika’s hand receives a letter asking if he knows what happened to her. But it is Ivan, a workman at the manor, who supplies the key missing pieces as he aids the partisans after seeing Veronika and the doctor holding hands. Each recollection establishes a distinctive character and voice and another facet of the woman who touched them all. Each also provides a different view of the war.
