        Tripping the Flight Fantastic

        by Bradt Guides

Nabbing flights for less than a fiver, Andrew Fraser took off on a month long jaunt around ten European cities for £144. In this entertaining account of his trip, he not only describes what he saw, but also how he did it, coaching aspiring travellers in how to create their own dream travel itineraries on flights which cost less than an airport latte. Join him on a bargain journey to some of Europe's weirdest, least visited backwaters, while also learning how to plan a ten-city adventure of your own. Andrew Fraser travelled 6,928 miles at an average cost of 2p per mile. Now you can, too. This unique title – the only one available that explains how to travel so far for so little – takes in some of Europe’s least discovered cities, including Skopje, Girona, Thessaloniki, Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw, as well as giving an entertaining overview of some more familiar places, such as Barcelona, Rome and Brussels. It tells you how to book secret five star hotels for three star prices with no mystery about where you are going to stay, how to travel the world cheaply from your local airport, and how to save a fortune and create an adventure by abandoning the notion of the linear return flight. Uncovering the little known travel gems which you can fly to for under a tenner, it is also an often surreal, idiosyncratic and funny account of one man’s adventures on the move, from attending an octopus autopsy in Barcelona to unearthing uncomfortable secrets in Europe's new Capital of Culture and discovering hip Warsovian apartments which straddle the worlds of Molotov and Madonna. What’s more, it’s a cultural, gastronomic and historical tour of some of Europe's most thrilling but least known cities. Andrew Fraser is former Travel Editor and Deputy Editor of Attitude magazine, and former Chief Writer of OK! Magazine. He has had a love of the obscure, a love of bargains, and a love of travel since he was a strange eight year-old-boy locked in his bedroom obsessing over maps of Narnia-esque towns, cities and regions on the red side of the European map, which he was told he would never be able to visit. When the Berlin wall fell in 1989, he rushed to Prague, Bratislava and Budapest where he enjoyed the greatest adventure of his life so far, costing little more than pennies. Now in 2016, the internet and low cost airlines, have brought back those halcyon days of cheap travel bliss and Andrew Fraser’s mission in life is to transport you to places beyond your wildest dreams for less than the cost of your airport latte. Come join him.

The Last Case of Journalist Cronina

        by Anastasiia Pika

Aliona Cronina is a young Ukrainian journalist who started working in a highly censored publication, fully controlled by its Russian sponsor. During Euromaidan, she realized that she can no longer be a detached witness to the events and wants to fight Kremlin propaganda and reveal the truth to people. Aliona will build a brilliant career: IT journalist, Ukrainian parliament employee, MI6 intelligence agent — and she will try to thwart the Russian invasion of Ukraine that started on February 24, 2022.   The novel consists of four parts, each chapter corresponding to a case file the heroine takes on. The novel is not just about modern Ukrainian history in 2012–2022; it is primarily about the development of Ukrainian journalism and democratic society. The author seeks to answer the question of why neither censorship, nor Putin’s propaganda in the Ukrainian media, nor the attempts to suppress Ukrainian revolutions by force, nor even forced emigration and war can make a dent in Ukrainians’ inner strength and perseverance.

        An Oral History

by Heda Margolius Kovály and Helena Třeštíková; translated by Ivan Margolius

This life and death human drama is not just about one survivor but a meaningful observation of an even more significant story about the bloody outcomes of extremism. – New York Journal of Books   Through interviews with award-winning filmmaker Helena Treštíková, Kovály recounts her experiences under fascist and communist oppression. Miraculously surviving both Łódz Ghetto and Auschwitz, then escaping from a death march, Heda participated in the Prague Uprising and its liberation. Later, under Communist rule Heda suffered extreme social isolation after her first husband Rudolf Margolius was unjustly accused in the infamous Slánský Trial and executed for treason. Her son and translator of the book, Ivan Margolius, adds critical contextual information surrounding the trial and its recently uncovered documents and film footage. Remarkably, Kovály, who was exiled in the United States after the brutal crushing of the Prague Spring, only had love for her country and continued to believe in its people. She returned to Prague in 1996 and died there in 2010 at the age of 91.

        THE SECRET CALLED ERICH ŠLOMOVIČ

by SLAVKO PREGL AND LEON POGELŠEK

THE SECRET IS CALLED ERICH ŠLOMOVIČ (Skrivnost se imenuje Erich Šlomovič) Bata, a Belgrade antique dealer who does not speak any foreign languages, chooses young Leon from Ljubljana as his assistant for deals around Europe. Bata seems to be someone who will introduce the ambitious art student into the society of elite gallerists and high earnings. This promise becomes even more tangible when in an old villa in Zagreb, whilst buying a magnificent Vienna book case, they come across a dusty catalogue of Šlomovič’s exhibition, in which there is a list of French Impressionist paintings, and others from Modigliani to Renoir, from Kandinsky to Picasso, etc. The paintings disappeared one night in 1939 when two trains collided on their way to an exhibition in Belgrade and since then their fate has been shrouded in mystery. Occasionally they appear on the art market or in articles at home and abroad, even a film has been made about them … In Pregl’s novel, however, the story about the “secret of the Šlomovič” collection, full of lies, twists, deceptions, humour, hedonism and eroticism, is for the first time told by a player who created it from within.
