      • The Shoestring Publisher

        The Shoestring Publisher is an independent publisher of illustrated books on India’s history and cultural heritage, with a particular focus on the visual arts including architecture, fine art, design, film, photography and textiles.   Founded by Meera Ahuja in 2006, it has received the Indian Tourism Award for Excellence in Publishing for its panoramic limited editions The Monumental India Book (acclaimed as one of the world’s ten best coffee-table books of 2009) and The Sacred India Book. Its most recent publications are America: Films from Elsewhere (2019) and the monograph Mrinalini Mukherjee, published in conjunction with the exhibition “Phenomenal Nature: Mrinalini Mukherjee” at The Met Breuer, NY, in 2019.   Shoestring’s numerous international co-editions include The Monumental India Book (Citadelles & Mazenod, 2007; Schirmer Mosel Verlag, 2008; The Vendome Press, 2008; and Constable & Robinson, 2008), Western Artist and India: Creative Inspirations in Art and Design (Thames & Hudson, 2013) and Mughal Architecture and Gardens (Antique Collectors’ Club, 2011; and Éditions de La Martinière, 2013).

        Fanette, 14, lives with her mother in Paris. Her neighbour is Aron Schatz, 95. Fanette has been friends with Aron since childhood and learned German from him. A student stay abroad brings her to Germany, in Aron Schatz’s former country. In her luggage is a pick-up for a lady’s coat, which has outlasted the war and which Aron gave to Fanette before she left. While Fanette is in Germany, Moumouche, her school friend, takes care of Aron Schatz. The old Jew and the young Arab become friends. Aron begins to talk about his past and about the war. In Germany, Fanette tries to find out what the coat is all about and what happened to Aron's relatives during Second World War. Actually she meets people in the village who knew Aron's uncle and aunt. And she meets granddaughter of the the tailor's, who made and kept the coat for Aron's aunt.

        Nicht systemkonform – Menschen und Schicksale – 1938-1945Mikroforschung zu nicht systemkonformen Menschen und ihren Verwandten sowie deren Schicksalen unter dem NS-Regime, ausgehend von in der Marktgemeinde Gols im Burgenland gebürtigen und/oder wohnhaften Personen. Mit diesem Werk verschafft uns Hobbyhistoriker Friedrich Radlspäck einen Einblick in die schwierige Zeit des Nationalsozialismus in Österreich. Sein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Verfolgung, Ausbeutung und Ermordung von Roma, Juden und Menschen mit Behinderungen. Der Golser geht den Fluchtrouten der Familien nach und schreibt über ihre Schicksale während und nach der Flucht. Darüber hinaus berichtet er über die Helferinnen und Helfer, welche sowohl in der Umgebung als auch im Ausland bemüht waren, die Verfolgten zu retten, und damit ihr eigenes Leben in Gefahr brachten.Friedrich Radlspäck recherchierte fünf Jahre lang auf wissenschaftlicher Basis über die Schicksale der in Gols geborenen oder wohnhaften Personen. Er durchsuchte Zeitungsartikel, Geburten- und Sterberegister, Unterlagen aus den KZs sowie wissenschaftliche Werke und Erfahrungsberichte. Was er herausgefunden hat, dokumentierte er, nachvollziehbar mit unzähligen Quellenverweisen. So entstand ein Werk, das auch für Laien verständlich aufzeigt, wie mit nicht systemkonformen Menschen umgegangen wurde. „Am Ende werden die Leserinnen und Leser sehen, dass die Beweggründe für meine Recherchen rein subjektiver Natur sind, während die Ergebnisse wissenschaftlich fundiert sind und objektiv dargestellt werden.“ Friedrich Radlspäck
