        Onkel J.

        Heimatkunde

        by Andreas Maier

        Seit seinem Debüterfolg mit dem Roman Wäldchestag im Jahr 2000 ist Andreas Maier häufig unterwegs, um aus seinen Romanen zu lesen. Nur daß er in den letzten ein, zwei Jahren meist, wenn er eingeladen war, auch immer wieder schon aus dem kommenden Onkel J. las. Jedesmal hatte er damit das Publikum im Handumdrehen auf seiner Seite. Umstandslos fand man sich angeschlossen an Maiers Welt aus Wetterau, Familie, Fußball, Apfelwein, aus Thomas Bernhard und dem Evangelium nach Matthäus, aus Ängsten, Kneipenfreuden und -nöten, eingepackt in absurde Vorkommnisse und komische Erlebnisse. Jede Kolumne beginnt mit einem »Neulich«-Satz, die erste so: »Neulich war ich in Berlin. Das wird jetzt niemand weiter ungewöhnlich finden, aber ich bin Hesse, und mir ging in Berlin ein Wunsch in Erfüllung.« Dennoch handelt es sich um alles andere als ein Kolumnenbuch. Vielmehr nimmt Onkel J. – im Übergang von den ersten vier Romanen zu Maiers Projekt »Ortsumgehung« – eine zentrale Stelle ein. »Alles gehört zusammen, und für alles ist das Kolumnenbuch der Kern.«

        A concordance to the rhymes of The Faerie Queene

        by Richard Brown, J. B. Lethbridge, J. B. Lethbridge

        This book is the first ever concordance to the rhymes of Spenser's epic. It gives the reader unparalleled access to the formal nuts and bolts of this massive poem: the rhymes which he used to structure its intricate stanzas. As well as the main concordance to the rhymes, the volume features a wealth of ancillary materials, which will be of value to both professional Spenserians and students, including distribution lists and an alphabetical listing of all the words in The Faerie Queene. The volume breaks new ground by including two studies by Richard Danson Brown and J. B. Lethbridge, so that the reader is given provocative analyses alongside the raw data about Spenser as a rhymer. Brown considers the reception of rhyme, theoretical models and how Spenser's rhymes may be reading for meaning. Lethbridge in contrast discusses the formulaic and rhetorical character of the rhymes. ;

        Der Cimarrón

        Die Lebensgeschichte eines entflohenen Sklaven aus Cuba, von ihm selbst erzählt

        by Miguel Barnet, Miguel Barnet, Hildegard Baumgart, Lisa Grüneisen, Heinz Rudolf Sonntag, Alfredo Chacón, Miguel Barnet

        Miguel Barnet und eine Gruppe von Ethnologen besuchten den hundertdreijährigen Esteban Montejo. Sie begegneten einem hochintelligenten, eigensinnigen Mann voller Erinnerungen an längst Vergessenes, Erinnerungen aus dem Leben der Sklaven, aus der Zeit der Abschaffung der Sklaverei auf Cuba und des Befreiungskrieges gegen die spanischen Kolonialisten. Montejo ist ein Cimarrón, ein entlaufener Sklave, der lange Jahre in absoluter Einsamkeit in den Bergen gelebt hat. Später schloß er sich den Aufständischen an, die gegen die Invasion Cubas durch die Amerikaner kämpften. Der Cimarrón entstand nach Tonbandaufnahmen von Gesprächen, die Miguel Barnet über Wochen und Monate mit Esteban Montejo geführt hat. Das überraschendste daran ist die bilderreiche Sprache dieses ehemaligen Sklaven. Von unseren Augen vollzieht sich die lebendige Vermischung von afrikanischen Mythen mit dem Katholizismus zu einer der afro-cubanischen Religionen, wie sie Barnet in seinem Buch Cultos afro-cubanos beschreibt. Esteban Montejo schildert alles von seinem persönlichen Standpunkt aus: das Leben als Sklave auf der Zuckerrohrplantage, das Leben in den Bergen, den Krieg, die Zeit, als die Spanier wohl vertrieben, aber durch die Nordamerikaner ersetzt waren. »Dieses Buch«, schrieb Lévi-Strauss, »eröffnet eine völlig neue Gattung der ethnologischen Literatur. Ihr Kennzeichen: eine Vertrautheit mit der Wirklichkeit der untersuchten Ethnie, die weit über alles früher Versuchte hinausgeht«. Die Lebensgeschichte von Esteban Montejo wurde 1971 unter dem Titel El Cimarrón von Hans Werner Henze vertont.

        The reign of Richard II

        From minority to tyranny 1377–97

        by Alison McHardy

        The long-awaited prequel to Chronicles of the revolution covers the first twenty years (1377-97) of Richard II's reign. This richly-documented period offers exceptional opportunities and challenges to students, and the editor has selected material from a wide range of sources: well-known English chronicles, foreign chronicles and legal, administrative and financial records. These are arranged chronologically to form a coherent narrative of the reign. Clear and lively commentary and notes enable readers to make the fullest use of each document. The introduction describes the complex domestic and international situation which confronted the young king and offers guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of the reign's leading chronicles. The dramatic and diverse politics of the reign of Richard II make this the ideal special subject and an accessible, affordable, student-friendly documentary history of Richard II's reign has long been needed. This book is designed to fill that gap.

April 1954 begann in Washington die Untersuchung gegen den Physiker und langjährigen Leiter der amerikanischen Atomforschung J. Robert Oppenheimer. Der Untersuchungsausschuß, von der Atomenergiekommission der USA eingesetzt, sollte prüfen, ob sich der Wissenschaftler der Regierung seines Landes gegenüber loyal verhalten habe. El Camino by Miguel Delibes

        by Catherine Davies, Jeremy Squires

        Upon entering the Royal Spanish Academy in 1975, Miguel Delibes delivered an address which reclaimed El camino (1950) for the emerging Green movement. With a blend of hilarity, satire, pathos and tragedy, Delibes artfully explores the process of crossing boundaries in pursuit of maturity and social advancement, whilst also implying that real education is the unfolding of the human heart among friends and sweethearts within a shared social and natural space. This new annotated version of the text comprises an introductory essay discussing green issues, attitudes towards the Spanish peasantry under Franco, and the function of the novel's subtly orchestrated comedy. It also contains explanatory notes on the text, discussion topics and an extensive Spanish-English glossary. This edition is intended primarily for English-speaking students of Spanish literature and culture at school and university. ;

        Kaspar Hauser’s Brothers and Sisters. In search of the wild man

        by P. J. Blumenthal

        What makes human beings human? Is it a life in society that makes us what we are? We often hear stories of persons who have survived in the wild without social contact or who were supposedly raised by wild animals. Kaspar Hauser is probably the most well-known example, but certainly not the only one. P. J. Blumenthal has taken up the hunt for the “wild man” Homo ferus on the boundary between man and animal.

        Constitutions and political theory

        Second edition

        by Jan-Erik Lane

        Since constitutional arrangements are what make politics work, they are a central concern of political theory. This book, now completely updated, was the first comprehensive exploration of the political theory of constitutions. Jan-Erik Lane begins by examining the origins and history of constitutionalism and answers key questions such as: what is a constitution? Why are there constitutions? From where does constitutionalism originate? How is the constitutional state related to democracy and justice? Constitutions play a major role in domestic and international politics in the early 21st century and an updated version of this classic textbook will introduce students to a number of different areas - theoretical, empirical and moral - which will aid their understanding of this important topic. ;

        Reading Walter Benjamin

        Writing through the catastrophe

        by Richard Lane

        'Reading Walter Benjamin' explores the persistence of absolute in Benjamin's work by sketching-out the relationship between philosphy and theology apparent in his diverse writings, from the early youth-movement essays to the later books, essays and fragments. The book examines Benjamin from two main perspectives: a history-of-ideas approach situating Benjamin in relation to the new German-Jewish thinking at the turn of the twentieth-century, as well as the German youth movements, Surrealism and the 'Georgekreis'; and a conceptual approach examining more critical issues in relation to Benjamin and Kant, modern aesthetics and narrative order. Chapters cover: 'Kulturpessimismus' and the new thinking; metaphysics of youth: Wyneken and 'Rausch'; history: surreal Messianism; Goethe and the 'Georgekreis'; Kant's experience; casting the work of art; disrupting textual order; and exile and the time of crisis. The book uses new translations of Benjamin's essays, fragments and his 'Arcades Project', and makes substantial reference to previously untranslated material. Lane's text allows the non-specialist entry into complex areas of critical theory, simultaneously offering original readings of Benjamin and twentieth-century arts and literature. ;
