This book provides a series of exercises of various types covering matters of hydrology and watershed management. The exercises include true/false questions, multiple choice questions, and numeric, graphical, and analytical exercises. The questions draw on the basic disciplines of hydrology and physics, with some stress placed on correct or appropriate units. The questions reflect the authors' many years of teaching watershed management at undergraduate and graduate levels. Questions cover: 1. Terminology and measurement of flow (and units) 2. Answers are concise but contain enough information to help students study and revise on a topic-by-topic basis. The book concludes with suggestions for student exercises and projects and is an invaluable resource for both students and instructors.

With increasing water scarcity, pressure to re-allocate water from agriculture to other uses mounts, along with a need to put in place institutional arrangements to promote 'higher value' uses of water. Many developing countries are now experimenting with establishing new institutional arrangements for managing water at the river basin level.This book, based on research by IWMI and others, reviews basin management in six developed and developing countries. It describes and applies a functional theory of river basin management, based on the idea that there is a minimum set of functions required to manage basins effectively and a set of basic conditions that enable effective management institutions to emerge. The book examines the experiences of both developed and developing countries in order to see what lessons can be learned and to identify what constitutes the core of a 'theory of river basin management'. It concludes that although it is difficult for developing countries to adopt approaches and institutional designs directly from developed countries, basic principles and lessons are transferable.

An integrated approach that stresses both the importance of participatory planning and the institutional and technical constraints and opportunities is therefore necessary. The institutional and technical context for managing watersheds and river basins, including the involvement of both the public and private sectors, is also examined.

Niemand scheint sich an Nestor Machno zu erinnern. Anarchismus, das gab es nie. Bis er im November 2004 in Charkiw, zu Füßen des »Fuck-Lenin-Denkmals«, wiederaufersteht.

Russian agents therefore tried to bring about a "Crimea scenario", another secession in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. The resulting "Ukraine conflict", often called a civil war, is in fact a Russian war of attrition against Ukraine. President Putin intends to resolve it on his terms in the Minsk process: through a de facto "autonomous" part of the Donbass in the Ukrainian state, independent of Kiev, as a lever for Russian political influence. Winfried Schneider- Deters, a renowned expert on Ukraine, analyses narratively and in detail the events from 2013 to 2019 and places the Russian- Ukrainian conflict in the context of the dawning "Chinese century".

Juri Andruchowytsch, geboren 1960 in Iwano-Frankiwsk/Westukraine, dem früheren galizischen Stanislau, studierte Journalistik und begann als Lyriker. Außerdem veröffentlicht er Essays und Romane. Andruchowytsch ist einer der bekanntesten europäischen Autoren der Gegenwart, sein Werk erscheint in 20 Sprachen. 1985 war er Mitbegründer der legendären literarischen Performance-Gruppe Bu-Ba-Bu (Burlesk-Balagan-Buffonada). Mit seinen drei Romanen Rekreacij (1992; dt. Karpatenkarneval, 2019), Moscoviada (1993, dt. Ausgabe 2006), Perverzija (1999, dt. Perversion, 2011), die unter anderem ins Englische, Spanische, Französische und Italienische übersetzt wurden, ist er unfreiwillig zum Klassiker der ukrainischen Gegenwartsliteratur geworden. Sabine Stöhr, 1968 geboren, studierte Slawistik in Mainz und Simferopol. Seit 2004 übersetzt sie aus dem Ukrainischen, v.a. die Werke von Juri Andruchowytsch und, gemeinsam mit Juri Durkot, das Romanwerk von Serhij Zhadan. 2014 wurde sie mit dem Johann-Heinrich-Voß-Preis für Übersetzung ausgezeichnet. Ebenfalls 2014 erhielt sie, gemeinsam mit Juri Durkot und dem Autor, den Brückepreis Berlin für Die Erfindung des Jazz im Donbass von Serhij Zhadan. 2018 wurde Sabine Stöhr und Juri Durkot der Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse verliehen für ihre Übersetzung des Romans Internat von Serhij Zhadan.

Approaches to research on the causes and impacts of soil erosion have changed significantly over recent years. Whereas biophysical research traditionally utilized small, carefully-managed erosion plots, models and methods are now available to study impacts of broad scale management on the hydrology and water quality of catchments and even river basins. Corresponding research tools have been developed for social and economic analysis at the household, farm and community levels. This book reviews the latest developments in such soil erosion studies. These are considered on a matrix of scales, from plot to river basin, and from farm to national policy. Some chapters review background issues while others consider specific methods. Conclusions of working groups are presented in another chapter. The cacao (Theobroma cacao) plant is an important Neo-Tropical species whose natural habitat is the Amazon basin. Over the last 30 years there has been a considerable geographical expansion in the availability of cacao genetic resources. As a result the plant has a rich genetic diversity that exists at two levels: that of the primitive populations in the area of original distribution of the species, and that of the derived cultivated populations. This book provides a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of the diversity of the species. It starts by examining the diversity and inheritance of the characteristics of primitive populations in the Amazonian and Caribbean regions. It then looks at the evolution of diversity within cultivated populations first in South America and around the Caribbean, and then beyond the Americas. The book describes the inter-relationships between populations based on morphological and molecular markers. It also examines the conservation of genetic resources and how these genetic resources can be utilized to produce new cultivars.
