        Contemporary history on trial

        Europe since 1989 and the role of the expert historian

        by Harriet Jones, Kjell Ostberg, Nico Randeraad

        Is it right for historians to serve as 'expert witnesses' to past events? Since the end of the Cold War, a series of heated and politicised debates across Europe have questioned the 'truth' about painful episodes in the twentieth century. From the Holocaust to Srebrenica, inquiries and fact-finding commissions have become a common device employed by governments to deal with the pressure of public opinion. State-sponsored programmes of education and research attempt to encourage a common moral understanding of the lessons we learn from these painful memories. Contemporary historians have increasingly been drawn into these efforts since 1989 - in the courtroom, in the media, on commissions, as advisers. In a series of thoughtful essays, written by leading historians from across Europe, this volume considers the ethics and responsibilities that this new role entails. For anyone concerned with the role of the historian in contemporary society and how we arrive at a public understanding of history, this book is essential reading. ;

        A Cool History of UkraineFrom Dinosaurs Till Now

        by Inna Kovalyshena

        Do you really think that history is boring and hard to under- stand? The heroes of this book thought so, too, at first. But just one interesting discovery pushed them to get to know history better — and to see that it can be fascinating, vibrant and so close to each of them. Four friends decide to explore the Ukrainian history and learn the truth: what kind of dino- saurs lived on our lands, who fought for Ukraine’s independ- ence, and why Ukrainians are the way they are. It turns out that history can be exciting and very important, even if it was back in the days of the dinosaurs. The subject of the book is the history of Ukraine from dinosaurs to today, which is interestingly and directly revealed. The main characters are children, in whom readers can recognize themselves. The text is written with humor and simple words, which makes the perception of information interactive. The book touches on important points of Ukraine's struggle for independence over many years.

        THE DREAMTIME

        by Mstyslav Chernov

        The Dreamtime is a novel, written by Mstyslav Chernov, a war reporter working for Associate Press, and released in 2021 by Sammit-Knyha Publishing House. “Dreamtime” is a 460-page fusion of a documentary and a psychological thriller. The book is based on real events and has been written over an eight-year period. Drawing on the Indigenous Australians’ concept of the dreamtime, the novel explores a social collective experience of war and conflict and is based on real events witnessed by the author during the war in eastern Ukraine and the migration crisis in southern Europe over the recent years. It comprises four intertwined plots spanning in space from Ukraine’s war-torn Donbas to southern Europe and southeast Asia, tied together by themes of existential conflict and the blurred line between reality and dreams. The novel is published in Ukrainian. It was well-received by critics and praised for its realism in depicting war, for its creative literary depiction of how dreams reflect the psyche, and for its "serious" and "skillful” prose. What Will Give Us Strength

        by Tetiana Teren (compiler)

        What gives us strength? To us as individuals, to our families, to the country, to the world? Each of us has his own source of inspiration. But what to do if it does not always work? Then we are looking for the strength in others, for their advice and support, for their way of keeping strong in challenging times. In 2019-2020, Ukrainians needed additional sources of strength, because war, uncertainty, political populism, and pandemic created additional stress. During those years twenty-five leading Ukrainian intellectuals reflected on their sources of their resilience in the publication "What will give us strength?". Collected under one cover, twenty five essays discuss a difficult period of challenges in the life of each author individually as well as Ukraine in general. The answers offered by the authors will become a valuable guide for the reader, a model of motivation, an advice to hold on to.
