This book brings together a broad, interdisciplinary group of leading scholars to critically assess a recent proposal within translanguaging theory called deconstructivism: the view that discrete or ‘named’ languages do not exist. Contributors explore important topics in relation to the deconstructivist turn in translanguaging, including epistemology, language ideology, bilingual linguistic competence, codeswitching, bilingual first language acquisition, the neurolinguistics of bilingualism, the significance of language naming to Indigenous language reclamation efforts, implications for bilingual education and language rights, and the effects of translanguaging on immersion programs for endangered languages. Contributing authors converge on support for a multilingual perspective on translanguaging which affirms the pedagogical and conceptual aims of translanguaging but rejects deconstructivism. The book makes a valuable contribution to the development of translanguaging theory and will be required reading for scholars and students interested in one of the most vibrant and vital debates in contemporary applied linguistics.

In der klassischen Disziplin der Sprachwissenschaft erscheint eine Zusammenfassung des Wissensstandes notwendig, um der im Wechsel der Theorien rasch voranschreitenden Forschung eine Bezugsbasis zu geben; in den neuen Wissenschaften können die Handbücher dem Forscher Übersicht geben und Orientierung verschaffen. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, wird in der Handbuchreihe, was· die Vollständigkeit in der Darstellung,· die Explizitheit in der Begründung,· die Verlässlichkeit in der Dokumentation von Daten und Ergebnissen und· die Aktualität im Methodischenangeht, eine Stufe der Verwirklichung angestrebt, die mit den besten Handbuchkonzeptionen anderer Wissenschaftszweige vergleichbar ist. Alle Herausgeber, die der Reihe und diejenigen der einzelnen Bände, wie auch alle Autoren, die in den Handbüchern ein Thema bearbeiten, tragen dazu bei, dieses Ziel zu verwirklichen. Wenngleich als Hauptzweck der Handbuchreihe die angemessene Darstellung des derzeitigen Wissensstandes in den durch die jeweiligen Handbuchbände abgedeckten Ausschnitten der Sprach- und Kommunikationswissenschaft zu gelten hat, so wird doch bei der Abgrenzung der wissenschaftlichen Bereiche, die jeweils in einem Handbuchband erschlossen werden sollen, keine starre Systematik vorausgesetzt. Die Reihe ist offen; die geschichtliche Entwicklung kann berücksichtigt werden. Diese Konzeption sowie die Notwendigkeit, dass zur gründlichen Vorbereitung jedes Bandes genügend Zeit zur Verfügung steht, führen dazu, dass die ganze Reihe in loser Erscheinungsfolge ihrer Bände vervollständigt werden kann. Jeder Band ist ein in sich abgeschlossenes Werk. Die Reihenfolge der Handbuchbände stellt keine Gewichtung der Bereiche dar, sondern hat sich durch die Art der Organisation ergeben: der Herausgeber der Reihe bemüht sich, eine Kollegin oder einen Kollegen für die Herausgabe eines Handbuchbandes zu gewinnen. Hat diese/r zugesagt, so ist sie/er in der Wahl der Mitherausgeber und bei der Einladung der Autoren vollkommen frei. Die Herausgeber eines Bandes planen einen Band inhaltlich unabhängig und werden dabei lediglich an bestimmte Prinzipien für den Aufbau und die Abfassung gebunden; nur wo es um die Abgrenzung zu anderen Bänden geht, ist der Reihenherausgeber inhaltlich beteiligt. Dabei wird davon ausgegangen, dass mit dieser Organisationsform der Hauptzweck dieser Handbuchreihe, nämlich die angemessene Darstellung des derzeitigen Problem- und Wissensstandes in den durch die jeweiligen Handbuchbände abgedeckten Teilbereichen, am besten verwirklicht werden kann. Zum Tode von Herbert Ernst Wiegand Wir trauern um unseren langjährigen Herausgeber Herbert Ernst Wiegand. Die Anfänge der überaus fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit den Verlagen de Gruyter und Niemeyer reichen bis in die 1970er Jahre zurück. Ein Herausgeber wie Herr Prof. Wiegand, der vier Jahrzehnte als Herausgeber und auch als Autor dem Haus sehr verbunden war und der die germanistische Linguistik entscheidend geprägt hat, hinterlässt große Fußstapfen und ein so umfangreiches Werk, dass es unmöglich ist, dieses bis ins Detail zu würdigen. Nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil Herbert Ernst Wiegand enorm produktiv war, und viele seiner Aufsätze bereits einen für Monographien üblichen Umfang erreichten. Allein seine Artikel in den verschiedenen internationalen Zeitschriften, Sammelbänden, Buchreihen und Handbüchern umfassen wohl circa 20.000 Seiten. Auch als Kooperationspartner war Herbert Ernst Wiegand hoch geschätzt und hat über die Jahre Projekte mit vielen namhaften Kollegen und Kolleginnen angestoßen und verfolgt. Zu den wichtigsten Herausgeberschaften zählt seine mit 2699 Seiten in vier Bänden erschienene „Internationale Bibliographie zur germanistischen Lexikographie und Wörterbuchforschung". Hinzu kommen Wiegands vielfältige Tätigkeiten im Rahmen der von ihm initiierten und mitinitiierten Publikationen: die „Handbücher zur Sprach- und Kommunikationswissenschaft" (HSK), die „Wörterbücher zur Sprach- und Kommunikationswissenschaft" (WSK), das „Wörterbuch zur Lexikographie und Wörterbuchforschung" (WLWF), das internationale Jahrbuch „Lexicographica" und die angeschlossene Reihe „Lexicographica Series Maior", die „Zeitschrift für germanistische Linguistik" sowie die „Reihe Germanistische Linguistik". Darüber hinaus war Herbert Ernst Wiegand ein engagierter Wissenschaftsorganisator, der zahlreiche Kolloquien, Workshops und Konferenzen organisierte und initiativ ins Leben rief, wie z.B. das „Lexikographische Kolloquium" in Heidelberg, das „Internationalen Kopenhagener Kolloquium" sowie das internationale „Kolloquium zur Lexikographie und Wörterbuchforschung" in Osteuropa. Für sein Engagement und seine unermüdliche Tätigkeit wurde er mehrfach mit der Ehrendoktorwürde ausgezeichnet: im Jahre 1996 an der „Aarhus School of Business" (Dänemark), im Jahre 2000 an der Universität Sofia (Bulgarien) und im Jahre 2006 an der Universität Stellenbosch (Südafrika). Wir haben Herrn Prof. Wiegand sehr geschätzt. Er war geradlinig, arbeitete unermüdlich und außerordentlich diszipliniert, manchmal bis zur Erschöpfung, und scheute sich nicht, sich auch mit schwierigen und unangenehmen Angelegenheiten auseinanderzusetzen. Er hatte einen kritischen, wachen Geist und war energiegeladen und unerschrocken, was große Projekte und Publikationen anging. Er war überhaupt als Mensch sehr aktiv, auch im ganz wörtlichen Sinne: Er liebte den Sport, insbesondere Tennis und Skifahren, und wusste die schönen Seiten des Lebens zu schätzen. Er züchtete Rosen, liebte gute Weine, die Sonne und das Leben selbst. Herbert Ernst Wiegand hat nicht nur der Lexikographie, sondern auch der germanistischen Linguistik unzählige wertvolle Impulse gegeben und seine vitale Präsenz im Miteinander wird uns sehr fehlen.
