        Fathers, Pastors and Kings

Visions of episcopacy in seventeenth-century France

        by Alison Forrestal

This is a major study of the transformation of early modern English rural society. It begins by assessing the three major debates about the character of English society: the 'Brenner Debate'; the debate over English Individualism; and the long running debate over the disappearance of the small landowner. It then turns to the history of Earls Colne in Essex, which has never before been the subject of a full-length study despite it being one of the most discussed villages in England. French and Hoyle's rounded account describes the arrival of a new landlord family, the Harlakendens, the tensions created by this change, and the gradual atrophy of their power. This account of change is backed up by a new and original analysis of landholding in the village, which depicts the land market in unprecedented detail, and explores the changing significance of landownership for ordinary people. It is a key work for all those interested in how English rural society changed between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

        Luther's lives

Two contemporary accounts of Martin Luther

by Elizabeth Vandiver, Ralph Keen, Thomas D. Frazel

This volume brings together two important contemporary accounts of the life of Martin Luther in a confrontation that had been postponed for more than four hundred and fifty years. The first of these is written after Luther's death, when it was rumoured that demons had seized the Reformer on his deathbed and dragged him off to Hell. In response to these rumours, Luther's friend and colleague, Philip Melanchthon wrote and published a brief encomium of the Reformer in 1548. A completely new translation of this text appears in this book. It was in response to Melanchthon's work that Johannes Cochlaeus completed and published his own monumental life of Luther in 1549, which is translated and made available in English for the first time in this volume. Such is the detail and importance of Cochlaeus's life of Luther that for an eyewitness account of the Reformation - and the beginnings of the Catholic Counter-Reformation - there is simply no other historical document to compare.

        Monastic experience in twelfth-century Germany

The Chronicle of Petershausen in translation

by Alison I. Beach, Shannong Li, Samuel Sutherland

Monastic experience in twelfth-century Germany provides a rare window on to monastery life in the tumultuous world of twelfth-century Swabia. From its founding in 992 through the great fire that ravaged it in 1159 and beyond, Petershausen weathered countless external attacks and internal divisions. Supra-regional clashes between emperors and popes played out at the most local level. Monks struggled against overreaching bishops. Reformers introduced new and unfamiliar customs. Tensions erupted into violence within the community. Through it all the anonymous chronicler struggled to find meaning amid conflict and forge connections to a shared past, enlivening his narrative with colorful anecdotes - sometimes amusing, sometimes disturbing. Translated into English for the first time, this fascinating text is an essential source for the lived experience of medieval monasticism.

As the Father Sent Me, So I Send You

Theology and Spirituality of Priestly Apostolic Ministry

        by Ángel Cordovilla

This work, halfway between the personal testimony and the theological reflection, is divided into three parts. The first displays the historical and cultural situation that has provoked a radical change in the way of perceiving and understanding priestly ministry. The second identifies four features that may enlighten nowadays the image and mission of the priest: the disciple, apostolic, fraternal, and secular dimensions. The third part deepens into the basic tasks of his mission –the preaching of the Gospel, the sanctification by way of the sacramental and liturgical action, and the guidance of God’s people–, without forgetting that the criterion that must guide and feed the apostolic existence is the daily practice of the ministry, the true and proper way to holiness.

Aus dem Versagen lernen: Wie uns die NSA-Affäre bei Corona helfen kann

        by Bernd Liske

German history knows many stories of failure. It has not yet been decided whether history will include the current corona pandemic. When history is said to repeat itself, there is a systemic reason for it: patterns of behavior repeat themselves. Reflecting on history is always helpful, and there is no doubt that the 2013 NSA affair is a story of failure. Edward Snowden's revelations determined the political discussion in Germany for months and the media every day. But the lack of experience in sovereign action and the political culture led to the fact that the CDU and FDP government and the opposition parties indulged in mutual blame and the affair ultimately turned into a big entertainment show, from which little substantial in terms of more security grew . This was certainly also due to the upcoming federal election campaign. Based on a construct of a redesign of the networks originally developed by him in the BITKOM Defense Working Group, the author describes his personal experiences as a citizen of Germany in the effort to turn the revelations into substantial action which prevents spying on the German economy and society as a whole. He describes in detail how he turned to the political elite in Germany and encountered a wall of silence. He added scenes of his own to the show, in which he acted and was able to follow the actual action up close, but the author, who has dealt with socio-political issues for many years, is interested in more. Similar to the corona epidemic today, the NSA affair offered a deep insight into the state of society, which in turn gave rise to action on all levels of society. His experiences with the political elite led to the question of the reasons for the agony he perceived in Germany in coping with the increasing social challenges. In addition to the NSA affair, he also deals with the parties' election programs for the 2013 federal election, the famous speech by Barack Obama in front of the Brandenburg Gate, speeches by the then new Pope Francis, doping in Germany and the Gustl Mollath. The book, which illuminates the period between June 5, 2013 and June 19, 2013 and was created within three weeks in August 2013, is an autobiographical and contemporary document that enables deep insights into the constitution of German society. of substance development towards the values that it has set for itself, as well as the individual and social abilities to cope with problems and the common sense as a people to tackle upcoming challenges together, makes it closed highly topical and extremely useful reading. The extensive list of sources is very helpful, ranging from Kant and Hegel to the Declaration of Independence of the United States and texts of the Vatican up to contemporary events and enables the reader to read beyond the book based on his own interests.

The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture

        by Eric J. Hill

Originally published in 1975, this Pulitzer Prize-winning biography chronicles the life of Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy (1814-1888), New Mexico's first resident bishop and the most influential, reform-minded Catholic official in the region during the late 1800s. Lamy's accomplishments, including the endowing of hospitals, orphanages, and English-language schools and colleges, formed the foundation of modern-day Santa Fe and often brought him into conflict with corrupt local priests. His life story, also the subject of Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop, describes a pivotal period in the American Southwest, as Spanish and Mexican rule gave way to much greater influence from the U.S. and Europe. Historian and consummate stylist Paul Horgan has given us a chronicle filled with hardy, often extraordinary adventure, and sustained by Lamy's magnificent strength of character.
