        Perspectives on contemporary printmaking

        Critical writing since 1986

        by Ruth Pelzer-Montada

This anthology, the first of its kind, presents thirty-two texts on contemporary prints and printmaking written from the mid-1980s to the present by authors from across the world. The texts range from history and criticism to creative writing. More than a general survey, they provide a critical topography of artistic printmaking during the period. The book is directed at an audience of international stakeholders in the field of contemporary print, printmaking and printmedia, including art students, practising artists, museum curators, critics, educationalists, print publishers and print scholars. It expands debate in the field and will act as a starting point for further research.

        T. Shevchenko. Life in art

by Dmytro Stus, Tetyana Chuiko, Anastasia Morozova, Yulia Shilenko

Of course, the fate of the artist was formed in a certain way because he realized his vocation - to be a poet. On the other hand, he lived his life as a professional artist. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, T. Shevchenko worked as an artist in the Temporary Commission for the consideration of ancient acts (Kyiv Archaeographic Commission), applied for the position of drawing teacher at the University of St. Volodymyr in Kyiv. And when his plans were broken by arrest, then in exile, despite the strict imperial ban on writing and drawing, the artist was able to work in his specialty, although not officially. Shevchenko devoted the last years of his life to the development of etching, having received the title of academician in engraving. The publication consists of two parts. The first is devoted to the works of the artist, made in graphic techniques, as well as sepia and watercolor. Given the fact that there are few oil paintings in the artist's works, we singled them out in the second part, trying to break stereotypes about their perception. Each section of the first part is devoted to a separate genre, which was addressed by T. Shevchenko. The largest of the sections are divided into thematic headings, which allows you to see the works of the artist from a new, perhaps unexpected, angle. In turn, the commentary to each work contains a brief history of creation (places, circumstances, relationships, etc.) and artistic characteristics that reveal the performing skills of the author. In addition, an important addition is the part of the commentary "Interesting" and quotes from the novels, Diary, correspondence of the artist, memoirs of his contemporaries. You can start your acquaintance with the publication from any section or even heading. Traveling through Shevchenko's paintings on separate routes you will have a complete rich journey through the original world of the artist.

        Albrecht Dürer’s material world

by Edward H. Wouk, Jennifer Spinks

The painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. This book accompanies the first major exhibition of the Whitworth art gallery's outstanding Dürer collection in over half a century. It offers a new perspective on Dürer as an intense observer of the worlds of manufacture, design and trade that fill his graphic art. Artworks and artefacts examined here expose understudied aspects of Dürer's art and practice, including his attentive examination of objects of daily domestic use, his involvement in economies of local manufacture and exchange, the microarchitectures of local craft and, finally, his attention to cultures of natural and philosophical inquiry and learning.

        GERALDO DE BARROS: THAT’S IT

        by Fabiana de Barros (author)

Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998) was one of the most important representatives of Brazilian’s Modernism. Roger Excoffon

        Le gentleman de la typographie

        by David Rault

Roger Excoffon: a name that means little to the man in the street. And yet… if this man in the street were born in France between 1930 and today, he would doubtless have been exposed to one of his creations. A talented typeface designer (Mistral, Banco, Choc and Antique Olive all bear his signature) and adman (he designed hundreds of posters and logos, such as for Air France), Roger Excoffon is likely among those whose splendid work accompanies our every step, emphatically inhabiting the collective unconscious. His alphabets were whole, alive with uncommon personality and vigor; they were highly prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s, gracing many cafés, hair salons and bakeries, adorned with a flavor and connotations that in fact would engender a disinterest in following years; willingly obsolescent, profoundly French, esthetically dazzling, they are integral to our history and culture. This bilingual French and English monograph by David Rault (graphic designer and journalist, director of the Atelier Perrousseaux collection, member of ATypI, and author of Guide pratique de choix typographique) deals with the type designer as well as the adman, with the man as well as the artist, and features: a biography based on an unpublished interview Roger Excoffon gave to François Richaudeau in 1977; an important iconography (including rare photographs by Jean Dieuzaide and never before published paintings from private collections); and exceptional contributions by Massin, Peter Knapp, José Mendoza y Almeida, Jean-François Porchez, François Richaudeau, Yves Perrousseaux and Hrant Papazian.

        Guide pratique de choix typographique

Nouvelle édition, revue et augmentée : un véritable guide de survie en milieu typographique !

        by David Rault

Every typeface, beyond its shape, carries its own story and a cultural, historical and social legacy; it creates, by its sole presence on a page, beyond the meaning of the written words, an actual ambiance. This book is here to give you all the keys which will allow you to choose the right font for any given job, and to make a relevant and aesthetic layout. About 60 typefaces are presented along its pages; each of them is analyzed, its designer is presented, as well as the social context and every connotation brought out by its use. A form at the end of the book will allow you to find easily and quickly the right font based on keywords. Furthermore, a few personalities from the world of typography and publishing (Erik Spiekermann, Xavier Dupre, Alejandro Paul, Alain Beaulet or Bas Jacobs) participated to the book by answering the tricky question "what is your favorite typeface?" It is therefore possible to read this book in many different ways: either you need to quickly find the answer to a professional problem, or you read it from beginning to end, as an amator willing to know more about these letters we read without thinking, these familiar alphabets we see everywhere and abouth which we actually don't know much. This new edition, which follows the success of the first print, have been completely reviewed and upgraded, contains 50 pages more, with new typefaces and exclusive participations from Jim Parkinson, Nick Shinn, Etienne Robial, Jean-Christophe Menu and Bruno Leandri.

        Printmaking Second Edition

A Complete Guide to Materials & Processes

by Bill Fick and Beth Grabowski

Printmaking is a practical and comprehensive guide to printmaking techniques. This fully updated edition includes expanded chapters on digital and mixed media processes, and a brand new 'Print & Make' chapter, which explores the opportunities for creative expression within the many processes available to print makers. The more traditional techniques of relief, intaglio, collograph, lithography, screen printing and monoprint have also been refreshed with the addition of new images showing a broader range of subject matter, including more contemporary prints and international artists. Each technique is explored from the development of the printing or digital matrix, through the different stages of creation to image output. The Art of Cigar Bands

        by Philippe Mesmer

Cigar-bands have sdorned cigars for more than 150 years. Until World War I they were produced and printed to the hightest quality using the best methods available, with the result that many cigar-bands of the time are genuine works of art. Images depicted on the bands are varied, but specific themes may be distinguished – flowers and foliage, for example, or heraldic ‘charges’, or of course portraits of contemporary rulers and celebrities. This book features nearly 1,800 cigar-bands drawn from the collection of Roger van Reeth, including some of the most beautiful, some of the rarest and some of the oldest. Their presence adds something special to what is already a special publication: the Flavour, perhaps, of a superb Havana cigar.
