        Mindful Photography

        by Sven Barnow

One of the best-known mindfulness researchers, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines "mindfulness" as a specific form of attention to the here and now, intentional and non-judgmental. What does this mean for photography, for us as photographers?   The psychologist, scientist and passionate photographer Sven Barnow is convinced that mindful photography allows us to perceive the photographic process more intensively and that we can use photography as a means of expressing our inner states. Photography thus becomes a means of training concentration on the moment, sharpening our powers of observation and freeing ourselves as much as possible from the usual concepts, distractions and evaluations. Mindful photography can rekindle enthusiasm for photography through the healing process of deceleration. This requires a camera, some time and the desire to enjoy the inner stillness that comes with mindful photography. In this book, Sven Barnow shows you his photographs taken in this way and teaches you how to take authentic and expressive pictures, as free as possible from common judgements.     In this book: - Mindful portrait, street and travel photography - The "Happiness" Project - Mindfully photographing feelings - Exercises in mindful photography - Interviews with various photographers on the topic of "Mindfulness in Photography"

        Monochrome

See, photograph, edit, and print in black and white

        by Jürgen Gulbins, Andreas Zachmann

Black-and-white photographs - or monochrome images in general - have their own charm, a special impression. Such photographs work with reduced means, foregoing the sometimes "garrulous" color. Instead, shapes, gradients, contrast and brightness nuances come more into focus.   It is therefore important to pay increased attention to these factors as early as at the shooting stage. Since most cameras initially capture the digital images as color images - and there is much to be said for leaving it at that - it is important to perform an optimal conversion to black and white in digital post-processing. There are numerous solutions for this, which the book describes in detail, because not every process is suitable for every image. Further processing after conversion is essential, such as increasing contrast or selective post-processing such as regionally limited lowering and raising of tonal values. Finally, once converted, optimal black-and-white or monochrome printing requires sophisticated know-how, which the authors comprehensively explain.   The book is aimed at the ambitious photo amateur with basic knowledge of image processing. Adobe Lightroom and (optionally) Photoshop are used as tools. The techniques shown can also be easily transferred to other tools.   The third updated edition takes into account the advancements of Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic since the second edition and adds more working sessions.
