Author Biography
Konangi aka Elangovan hails from a distinguished family of artists and writers appreciated for the services it rendered towards India's struggle for freedom. The nom de plume ‘Konangi’ was inspired by C. Subramania Barathi's celebrated poem titled Puthiya Konangi ( the new prophet) which hailed the appearance of a new prophet to reform the nation.
Konangi commenced his literary career with the publication of Mathinimargal Kathai, followed by four more anthologies of short stories and a collection of short novels entitled Vellari Pen. Konangi launched his career as a novelist with Paazhi followed by three novels entitled Pithira, Tha and Neer Valari. He has been running a serious small literary magazine known as Kalkuthirai devoted to the cultivation of new experiments in modern Tamil literature, taking under its Wings young poets, writers and translators who are encouraged for their new wave contributions in various genres of contemporary Tamil Literature.
The collection of his first seventy short stories has been published under the title Saloon Narkaliyil Suzandrapadi. Konangi is an uncompromising Literary Classicist renowned for his strict adherence to the cultivation and dissemination of serious Literature thereby sustaining a sense of archaic richness and beauty of Tamil language, which is the need of the hour. Konangi lives in Kovilpatti located in South Tamil Nadu.
Konangi's later short stories along with his novels defy the conventions of traditional storytelling by an atemporal non-linear Narration which is to be deciphered like an ancient painting or a baroque symphony. Konangi invented a unique Tamil Prose to cater to his surreal visions and infinitesimal Perceptions of the flux of the cosmos. His prose reads like a poetic composition adorned with Antique Tamil words interwoven with floating dreamlike images and perceptions of the Ecosystem offering myriads of forms to Konangi's imagination. His Prose reverberates with the inherent musical tonality of Tamil language. Konangi is the chief exponent of the Baroque in modern Tamil fiction. His works evoke an intense nostalgia for the bygone Golden Ages of the pastoral world and the vanished harmony between man and nature.
