Vanishing Bees
Science, Politics, and Honeybee Health
by Kleinman, Daniel L. and Sainath Suryanarayanan
Description
In the fall of 2006 it had become clear to farmers, agricultural scientists, and commercial beekeepers that a mysterious and unexplained collapse of previously healthy beehives was going to continue unabated. All over the United States beekeepers were witnessing the collapse of their hives. By the spring of 2006, American beekeeping operations had lost between 30-90% of their hives, significantly higher than the typical winter losses suffered by apiaries due to parasitic mites, diseases, and poor nutrition. Entomologists began calling the disaster Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). In Vanishing Bees: Science, Politics, and Honeybee Health sociologists Daniel Lee Kleinman and Sainath Suryanarayanan portray a resulting crisis in US agriculture
