This book is part of a series sponsored by the PASCAL International Observatory. PASCAL is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to transforming universities through meaningful engagement in regional issues and generating collaborative knowledge to address those issues. PASCAL draws on cross-disciplinary and trans-national ideas to enhance place management, social capital, and lifelong learning. Transcending political boundaries and the associated funding streams requires innovative policy development and implementation. This book is a collection of international case studies representing the four PASCAL centers. Four continents are represented in this collective: RMIT University in Australia, University of South Africa in Africa, University of Glasgow in Europe and Northern Illinois University in North America). Universities are well positioned to not only influence but participate in social change. This book is a product of an organization whose mission is to transform universities so that they can better serve in this way. By honoring place in the context of bioregions, listening to communities as they identify their issues, and generating knowledge with these communities, we develop healthier spaces. -
