The soviet realia are not entirely clear to modern adolescents. Childhood in the late Soviet Union was not like it is now. Back in those days, everything was different and even scary to some point: a premonition of the nuclear war, propaganda, shortages, and confusing household items. The main characters of the book, a teenage Matvii and his father Petro, go to Lviv to visit their grandmother. There are still heaps of Soviet things in her ceiling cabinet and they are good at telling stories. Paretns are good at this as well, if you ask them well. The book gives a reason to talk about feelings of nostalgia and values.

Author Biography
Petro Yatsenko was born in 1978 in Lviv. He is the author of eight books. He also works in journalism and teaches creative writing. Yatsenko was a participant in the Gaude Polonia programme where he worked under the guidance of Booker Prize-winning Polish novelist Olga Tokarchuk, and the Bank Austria Literalis programme. The writer has received numerous national literary awards including The New Authors (for his book The Yoghurt God), and Smoloskyp (for Marianna, or The Boghdhi Tree). His novel The Comeback of Idiots was dramatized in 2016 at Chernihiv Theater. Don’t Listen. Don’t Speak. Don’t Look (Ukrainian - Nechui. Nemov. Nebach) won its author a UNESCO City of Literature first award. In 2021, the book "Union of Soviet Things" received the BBC Ukraine Book of the Year award.
