Under the Carefree Afternoon Sun
by Jeyran Gahan
Description
A different narrative of love between a Jewish girl and a Muslim boy
This novel is a narration of the life of the Jewish minority in Iran and their coexistence with Muslims. It’s the story of a girl called Mona living in a fanatic and strict Jewish family. She sings and plays the Taar. She meets Shahriar, a Muslim musician from a traditional family. Love sparkles and the story begins. According to Islamic and Jewish law, their marriage is not allowed unless one of them converts, yet conversion is forbidden in both religions. Mona’s aunt, Javahir-Jan, is a wise woman who also plays the Taar and is her only true supporter in the family. When young, she was also involved in a forbidden love story. Mona’s rebellious sister, Edna, who is bold enough to follow her own way, takes traditions for nothing and moves to Israel to buy her freedom. Mona is bound to make a choice: either forget about love or converts and marries Shahriar. Should she choose to go to Edna’s way or Javahir-Jan’s? Is there any other choice leading to a different destiny?

Reviews
This love story concerns a religious conflict which is considered a taboo in the Iranian society. The writer elaborates on different forms of prejudice in his poetic narration while keeping away from mottos and manifestations. She chooses a very bold and intact subject matter and she creatively and innovatively deals with it in her novel. The confrontation of the two religions which are politically quite in opposition takes on a different meaning through the eyes of a quiet woman in love. Mona and Shahriar face situations where they are forced to make serious choices. The world of prejudices and conflicts is ignorant of their passion, and the political and religious contexts they were raised in put a great deal of pressure on them.
The novel raised many controversies in Iran, yet drew a lot of attention. It was well received by the critics and gave way to the narration of a part of the Jewish minority which was less approached by writers before. “Rejection” as the result of religious beliefs and roots leads to a series of events which are impartially and effectively described by Jeyran Gahan. The reader of this novel will eventually come across a new image of the small community of Iranian Jews; a community that rages against a girl in love, a community which is a victim and a victimizer.
