Triumph: Collected Stories
Lizzie Harwood
with an Introduction by Jennifer Butler
A bouquet of quirky short stories told with intrigue and humour…
Triumph: Collected Stories offers a glimpse into the lives of contemporary women around the world on the verge of breakdowns or breakthroughs.
Who doesn’t know a gone girl or a complicated woman? A mother, sister, friend, or even that girl who looks back at you in the mirror. Love or defriend them, we all know them.
In this bouquet of short stories, you’ll meet a gang of gutsy gals, mothers-on-the-edge and anti-heroines, including Betty and Alabama, who feature in the forthcoming thriller/commercial fiction series Polaroids.
Prose like Katherine Mansfield on vodka shots, by a writer who could be Lena Dunham’s weird Antipodean cousin or Gillian Flynn’s doppelganger.
Lizzie Harwood’s love of her home country, New Zealand, spills over into her writing, as evidenced by the vibrant—and sometimes charmingly quirky—stories she tells. That isn’t to say she doesn’t adore her adopted country, France, where she currently resides with her husband and two children. She writes with a passion inspired by living and travelling around the world. Lizzie’s short story collection, Triumph, is out on February 23, 2015, followed by a memoir, Xamnesia: Everything I Forgot in my Search for an Unreal Life, in May 2015. Book one of her thriller/commercial fiction series, Polaroids is slated for release later in 2015. When she isn’t writing, she’s neck-deep in editing. Advance Praise for
Triumph: Collected Stories
“Lizzie Harwood’s beautifully written collection covers vast landscapes, from France to New Zealand, from families struggling to stay together to young women unable to find their way, from the need to be heard to the dark desires of the human heart. The array of moods, conflicts, and fears will keep readers turning the pages. Lizzie Harwood is one of my favorite writers, and this collection is a must for short story lovers.”
Janet Skeslien Charles, author of Moonlight in Odessa
“Each story in Triumph draws you into its world immediately, with compelling narrative and complex characters. Lizzie Harwood has mastered the art of the short story—you’ll feel as if you’ve walked alongside the characters in their journeys... just in time to move on to the next story.” Vicki Lesage, author of Confessions of a Paris Party Girl and
Confessions of a Paris Potty Trainer
“Lizzie Harwood’s writing sizzles with vivid language and sensory descriptions, which linger in the reader’s mind. The stories are carefully wrought so as to reveal the complexity of girls and women and their relationships to others. Human needs, desires, and the underbelly of regret are thoroughly explored with black humor. A highly engaging and original collection to be read at once.”Elena Kaufman, writer and performer
“You’ll laugh, fear and wonder with these ‘gone girls and complicated women’ who, in Lizzie Harwood’s exuberant, electric stories, manage to turn dismay into lusty self-derision, and calamity into a reckless kind of strength.” Marie Houzelle, author of Tita and Belle-Famille
“A fresh new expat riff on the secret life of girls—scandalous and heartbreaking.” Laurel Zuckerman, author of Sorbonne Confidential and Les Rêves Barbares du Professeur Collie
