The Reading Boy
by Mr. Xianming Meng
Description
In Reading Boy, the 9-year-old boy Kaikai loved reading aloud. In the cold winter nights, he read from his texts and library books to his illiterate grandpa & his little dog. They have no money to pay for cable TV and there is no other entertainment. Yet reading makes the cold winter nights not so boring for all the three members in the family. Why did the boy talk and read to his dog and why did the dog even enjoy his reading voice?
A touching story moves you into tears when you see how he, so little a boy, learns to take care of grandpa, talks to his dog about his longing for parents and later has to manage his daily life (home and school) alone after grandpa died and before his parents could find a school in the city willing to accept him. Finally when his parents could move him to the city, yet he had to cry desperately leaving behind his dog. Then what a life in the city is waiting for the country boy? A story that inspires love, empathy, bravery, persistence and care both in parents and children! A story reflecting the issues of children left behind in the rural area by parents who worked in the city and could not afford a family life in the city.
The two-part movie of the same title based on the story are the winner of San Diego International Kids film festival 2012 and 2013.
