Description
The Philippines are an archipelago of more than 7000 islands. The population of 106 Million people grows rapidly and communicates in 180 languages and dialects. Its strategic location and rich natural resources made it a target for colonial powers. For more than 300 years the Spanish ruled here, followed by the Americans. Therefore, the Philippines are the only country in Southeast Asia with a predominantly Catholic population, many people have Spanish names, the education system and cuisine are strongly influenced by the Americans. In the media we often read about the murderous war against drugs by president Duterte or of terrible natural disasters hitting the island nation.
Hilja Müller describes the country and its people, their culture, history and politics, well-informed and empathic.
