Its strategic location and rich natural resources made it a target for colonial powers. For more than 300 years the Spanish ruled here, followed by the Americans. Therefore, the Philippines are the only country in Southeast Asia with a predominantly Catholic population, many people have Spanish names, the education system and cuisine are strongly influenced by the Americans.
