Taiwanese women were once burdened by the custom of foot binding even when into the days of Japanese colonialization. Such custom not only limited their body mobilities, also excluded them from participating into sports almost completely. The foot bound women can hardly stand on their own, not even to mention running, jumping, or practicing gymnastic. With the banning of foot binding issued by Taiwan Governor-general's Office in 1915, which marked the beginning of ‘natural foot era‘ for the Taiwanese women, whom were finally able to cultivate their athletic ability ever since.
Lin, Yue-Yun, the protagonist of this book, was born right on the year that foot binding was banned. Therefore, she enjoyed the rights to attend P.E. classes and participate into sport competitions at school. Since 1931, Lin began to showcase her dazzling talent and athleticism on the sporting ground of Taiwan and Japan. Being the first generation of Taiwanese female sprinter, despite under the colonization of Japan, she once lived the dream of bringing Taiwan to the world and committed herself in training to take the stages of 1932, 1936 and 1940 Olympics, which unfortunately all failed on the verge of success for different reasons. Despite failing to fulfill her dream of ‘glorifying Taiwan through sport’, Lin has already served as a role model and paved the way for Taiwanese female athletes in challenging the Olympics.
