The Mindfulness & Mindbalancing Handbook
by Reinhard Kowalski
Description
Meditation is becoming a useful tool in the arsenal of the established healing professions. In particular Mindfulness meditation is recommended in the NICE guidelines as a treatment for depression and has proved helpful for a range of problems, including anxiety disorders and OCD. It can also be used with physical, psychosomatic and stress-related problems, and as a self-development programme. The handbook:
- Guides the reader into meditation practices in a systematic, gradual and practical way.
- Includes Cognitive Therapy exercises, reflections, relaxation, guided imagery, breathing exercises and a wide range of meditation practices from different traditions.
- Contains clear instructions on how to use the exercises and practices, as well as suggestions on how they can be used with individuals and in groups.
- Addresses the differing needs of readers, whether it is to 'dip into' meditation a little, to follow a programme, to learn about the spiritual aspects of meditation, or simply to create more peacefulness, calmness, groundedness and centredness in their own and in the lives of others.
- Includes two audio CDs for the reader to develop their own varied daily relaxation and meditation practices, as well as photocopiable worksheets, record-forms and audio exercises, so practitioners can read them out in groups or to individual clients, if they prefer to use their own voice.
Meditation is a complex subject. This handbook provides a clear and practical guide that introduces the reader to the wider context of meditation, provides an optional deeper understanding of some of the concepts and models, and includes comprehensive resources for those who want to explore meditation further.

Reinhard Kowalski's Mindfulness and Mindbalancing Handbook was recommended to me by a local bookstore specializing in Mental Health and Educational Resources. I was looking for a guidebook to use in planning meditation courses, and, happily, I needed look no further than this very complete volume. The publisher's description is totally accurate. There is enough material here to design courses for both individuals and groups, and also to explore one's personal practice, if one is so inclined. The information is organized sequentially so that it flows from a more theoretical, CBT-type basis, designed to gain the agreement of the conscious mind, into techniques of mindfulness using abstract concepts which can only be learned experientially. It's obvious that the author possesses a great wealth of knowledge and teaching experience; he has drawn from a variety of styles and extracted the simplest, most useful teachings, then constructed exercises to introduce them, most directly, to the uninitiated. This is really a smorgasborg of meditation techniques; if you want a strict manual, specific to a single "school" of meditation, then this might not be for you. However, if you believe, as I do, that each individual must find their own way, and can benefit from being exposed to a range of philosophies and techniques, this book will assist you greatly. The handbook is entirely free of dogma and it's clear that the author has gone to great lengths to produce a text which is readable, concise, and useful. The accompanying CDs are and excellent accompaniment to the workbook. The author's personal spiritual work is evident also in that he seems to have left his own ego quite out of the picture. Highly recommended. Sylvia Rayner, CSH, CTHt Hypnotherapist Squamish, BC, Canada
