Maggie loves hanging out with her best friends Methuselah (her talkative African Grey parrot) and Edmund (the richest boy in Hong Kong), but she loathes attending boring parties with her high-flying mum and dad! Little does she know that a Family Fun Day at Government House will trigger a thrilling adventure involving one of Hong Kong’s greatest mysteries: what happened to the immensely valuable Chater Collection, which was hidden on the eve of the Japanese invasion in World War Two? “Sarah Brennan’s work is a meeting between traditional Asian narratives and the universal taste of children for graphic stories. The tale-telling gifts shown in these books, along with the exuberance of the language and rhymes, make them unique in children’s literature.” – Thomas Keneally, Booker Prize-winning author of Schindler’s Ark
Author Biography
SARAH BRENNAN is the author of the best-selling Chinese Calendar Tales, the Dirty Story series and the multi-award-listed Storm Whale, all for primary school-aged children. Born in Tasmania, Australia, she grew up on the slopes of Mount Wellington surrounded by bush animals, goats and exotic poultry. She also played the bagpipes (at the very bottom of the garden) and wrote lots of stories and poems which she kept in a big pink plastic bag. Sarah worked as a lawyer in London before moving to Hong Kong in 1998, when she showed her plastic bag to a publisher and her first book was born. Sarah has a French husband and two grown-up daughters, and divides her time between France, Hong Kong and Australia, touring schools all around the world. CHARLY CHEUNG is an award-winning illustrator. She started doodling on scraps when she was 3 years old and her bedroom walls were always filled with finished jigsaw puzzles, the largest being over 2000 pieces! She has loved puzzles ever since and spends a lot of her time solving logic games. She also loves jazz dancing and picking out the tiniest details other people cannot see, such as little caterpillars and tiny bits of fluff which her Maltese dog, Mochi, leaves around the house. She was born in Toronto, Canada, grew up in Hong Kong, then studied and worked in London, where she illustrated her first children’s book for Real Reads’ William Shakespeare series. She has also won or been short-listed for several prestigious illustration awards including the World Illustration Awards 2019, Applied Arts Cartoon/Comic Illustration Series 2019 and American Illustration 2019.
