The Girl and The Little Fish

On a February night in 1938, Gabriela Mistral was visiting writer Emilio Oribe in Uruguay when, suddenly, his little daughter burst into the room carrying a precious hidden treasure: a little fish. Esther, the girl's name, had found it by the rocks near her house, in Montevideo. The next day, inspired by what had happened, Gabriela gave Oribe this poem as a gift. Ten years later, "The Girl and The Little Fish" was published in the Chilean newspaper La Nación as an unpublished poem, which version has been recovered by Escrito con Tiza in an edition with beautiful illustrations by of the most awarded Chilean artists, Alberto Montt.

Author Biography
Gabriela Mistral is Chile’s first National Prize for Literature (1957) The daughter of a dilettante poet, she began to write poetry as a village schoolteacher. She taught elementary and secondary school for many years until her poetry made her famous. Diplomatic and traveler, she became one of the greatest Spanish-speaking poets and influential voices of universal feminine poetry/Alberto Montt is a Chilean comic and cartoon illustrator. He has illustrated more than 40 children’s books. In 2011, his famous blog "Dosis Diarias" (Daily Dosis) was awarded for "Best Blog in Spanish" by German television station Deutsche Welle. His illustrations for the epic poem "La Araucana" were selected for the IBBY Honor List and received numerous literary awards.
