Author Biography
Darcy Ribeiro was born in Montes Claros (MG) on October 26, 1922. He stood out as one of Brazil's most brilliant intellectuals. He founded the University of Brasilia in 1962 and the State University of Northern Fluminense in 1993. He was Minister of Education (1962-1963) and Chief of Staff (1963-1964) during João Goulart's government, which was overthrown by the 1964 coup. In exile between 1964 and 1976, he worked as a university professor in various Latin American countries. After the opening up, he served as deputy governor of Rio de Janeiro (1983-1986) and senator of the Republic (1991-1997). He is the author of a vast body of work in the fields of anthropology, ethnology and education. He also wrote essays and novels. He died in Brasília on February 17, 1997.
