Description
Barbara Pym's humorous romantic comedies are fabulously witty and clever. When in 1977 the TLS asked critics to name the most underrated authors of the past 75 years, only one was named twice (by Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil): Barbara Pym.
She has been described as a modern Jane Austen by both Philip Larkin and Alexander McCall Smith.

Barbara Pym was born in 1913 in Shropshire and was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford. Her six earliest novels were all originally published in the 1950s and 1960s by Jonathan Cape. When in 1977 the TLS asked critics to name the most underrated authors of the past 75 years, only one was named twice (by Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil): Barbara Pym.
