The Assembly of the Wretched
by Salman Amin
Description
Like Life: Real, Bitter and Sweet; A Vivid Picture of Unseen Tehran
The story takes place in Tehran. The main character is a conscript named Qasem, who lives with his younger brother and his mother, Masoumeh. After the death of her husband, Masoumeh has married Ismail, a smuggler who uses her as a cover. To prevent his mother's impending trip with Ismail to move drugs, Qasem requests a leave of absence from Colonel Ghafoor. The colonel objects for no apparent reason and Qasem's excessive insistence leads to a conflict with the colonel. After wounding another soldier, Qasem runs away and hides at an abandoned gas station in the south of Tehran where Kobra, her young son, and Ibish live. Kobra is an addicted dealer and Ibish, suffering from all kinds of delusions as a result of consuming meth, clutches at straws to force his wife to live with him again. Later on, Maget joins them, a professional thief seeking revenge on his mistress who has married another man in his absence. Looking for a way to save his family from misery, Qasem, a now-wanted, unintentionally joins these miserable refugees and gets involved in their strange adventures, not knowing that his case has become a political and security case...

Reviews
This novel is the life story of people with similar fates and pains. It is a simple, familiar, and yet profound and thought-provoking narrative of a real situation. It is a vivid and humorous account of the lives of the invisible who have in common confusion, isolation, and being rejected. They always face various challenges and, through their engagement in new events, reveal a new face of the city. This novel is a portrayal of the man fighting to remain human in a world that does not care about humanity.
Characterization is a significant feature of this novel. The main idea and the whole story revolve around the social status of each character, especially Qasem, a fascinating, sometimes puzzling, contradictory, and challenging troublemaker; an ambitious young man whose fate has shattered his dreams; a dedicated human being with his desires scorned. He does not stand being overlooked, and incessantly fights against it. He sometimes seems very simple, and sometimes distant, complex, and unpredictable. Gradually, it becomes clear that to judge him is not as simple as it might seem. The quixotic Qasem always tries to perceive or narrate his distorted life in a different way as if he is trying to prove in vain that reality is nothing but what exists in his mind.
The contradiction between Qasem's intentions and his destiny reflects in the narrative, just as Qasem's confrontation with problems, even the most unpleasant ones, always has a bit of humor and makes the reader laugh.
By portraying these characters and their lives, the author represents deep layers of the society and the formidable dimensions of its ignorance and irresponsibility. He also depicts the inability of the law to do justice to the society’s lower classes, to those stuck in a vicious cycle and falsely accused of being responsible for all the problems, while even their struggles to get rid of the troubles lead to new ones.
