Description
The low number of uproars in working-class and underprivileged areas is the starting point for this sociological essay on community activism. Based on field surveys and interviews, Julien Talpin reveals how a silent repression subjugates activists in working-class neighborhoods. Through judicial harassment, financial blackmailing, accusations of communitarianism and government support for participatory democracy, he argues that governmental practices systematically undermine activism and protests. As getting together becomes a struggle, Julien Talpin also shows that, thanks to legal and self-financing strategies, communities’ responses are yet firmly on the rise.
