Bastards. Three of the main characters are absolute bastards. Let me backtrack briefly and say I am a fan of Scarlet Blackwell. She writes intense characters who exhibit characteristics more achingly human than any author I've known. Her heroes are never 1 dimensional good guys. That being said, Eban and Christian, despite the pain and heartache they suffer (in my opinion) are not redeemable in this story. I started skimming through it after page 149. I was so terribly angry with Eban and Christan that 'my' heart started to hurt.I just couldn't believe the pain they inflicted on people unnecessarily. I think the story, while well-crafted and superbly written, drags on with the angst for much too long. I could excuse the words hurled at one character from another but when these guys start jumping in bed with any and nearly everybody--who all happen to be hot--I couldn't excuse that. No matter how upset, or drunk they still knew what they were doing. Also, there were way too many accidents/robberies/shootings in a short period of time to be believable. I started to think these guys were living in the most dangerous city on Earth. So while I did not like half the characters AT ALL I can still appreciate good writing and well-rounded characters. -
