Pearls Decoded

Understand Popular Science through the Lens of a Pearl Farmer

by David CK Wong

Description

This book aims to show educators, marine environmentalists, aquarium enthusiasts and global pearl enthusiasts and professionals how pearl cultivation makes contributions to different aspects of society, both economic and ecological, through the Hong Kong experience. The ultimate goals are to inspire our next generation to develop a global perspective and to strengthen their ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills across different disciplines; to nurture their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills; and to foster their innovation and entrepreneurial spirit as required in the 21st century.

In this book, pearl cultivation will be used as the central axis and popular science as the perspective through which to:

- unveil the forgotten and neglected sides of pearl cultivation in Hong Kong;

- provide a new perspective—from the history of pearl hunting to today’s scientific methodologies—how Hong Kong’s pearl cultivation industry can grow with the times;

- share how Hong Kong’s pearl cultivation industry can achieve mutual benefits and economic symbiosis;

- update the responsibilities of the global citizen and stakeholder, and to appreciate the sharing of resources; and

- promote environmental education through pearl cultivation, and encourage active support and participation.

Interested readers will be able to use the contents covered in this book to strike up a conversation with their students on Applied Science, Marine Conservation, Environmental Protection, Economic Geography, Personal, Social and Humanities, Life and Death Education, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Education.
