Reviews

"Optimal Exposure" is a gripping and believable thriller. The plot unfolds rapidly and holds the reader's attention from beginning to end. Beyond being a riveting detective story, the book has yet another dimension. That is the author's ability to convey the experience of the background in which the story takes place - a visit to an Indian Festival, an expedition to the forests of Ecuador, as only a man, who, besides his literary talent, has personally experienced what he is describing. With the eye of an experienced photographer, the author also succeeds in conveying that to the reader, who, in addition to an enthralling story, receives the added value that adds so much to the reading experience.

Dan Rogel's books are a pleasure to read. The author, who is an engineer by training and a fine amateur photographer, by inclination, is gifted with several other qualities and talents that make his books so very readable. He knows how to skillfully weave a tragic thriller and especially how to untie its intricacies in a remarkably orderly way, step by step. His sharp and sensitive eye provides his characters, especially the bright and original police investigators, who solve the mystery, with a unique humanity that turns them into alluring heroes, who capture the heart of the reader, while a thread of humor is drawn through the whole fabric of the story.

The background of the book is so familiar to the author from his many expeditions around the world, like the spellbinding festival at Kombamelah, with its colorful masses of people, that takes place every three years in India in which the story of "Optimal Exposure" is so intricately drawn. And, indeed, the festival is described with the accuracy and detail we have come to expect from the author. This is not the last book under his belt, and there will be more excellent books that will keep his readers waiting expectantly to read.

I have been admiring and enjoying Mr. Rogel's photos on Facebook for many years never realizing that he was participating in a photography group that travels to different exotic places for shoots. Now he has written a thriller about this group which is well written and conceived. Not only did I learn all about how this photography group functions and competes, but I felt I was with Sherlock Holmes solving crimes. I think many others will enjoy their experience reading this book.
