by Frank Quilitzsch
Description
In spring 2015, journalist Frank Quilitzsch returns to China to revisit the places and facilities where he oncw taught German to a handful of students. Shortly after his arrival in China, the memories collide with the bizarre Chinese present.
Back then, in 1989, the student uprising in Tiananmen Square had just been defeated, the society was paralyzed, and there were almost only bicycles on the roads. Now the economy is booming, skyscrapers shoot up into the sky and superfast express trains run between the megacities.
But how are the people? The returnee is actually looking for his student Wang Wei, and an adventurous journey begins. The author is enchanted by Asian culture and poetry and is overwhelmed by China’s rapid development. Quilitzsch is traveling by bicycle, bus and Transrapid train, meets Mao Zedong, Confucius and Deng Xiaoping's cat and reveals the secret of the copy of the Weimar Goethe and Schiller monument in Anting.
