Miteux et magnifiques
by Wilwerth, Évelyne
Description
The banks of the canal, on the borders of Brussels. Pyramids of old trams, cars, scrap. the dump pits. All this ugliness, which sometimes turns into beauty… Like those characters, shabby or beautiful, beautiful and shabby. Because destinies tumble. Or take off. In no time. We cross and cross again Bilal, Marlene, Amsalu, Bérengère, Raphaël, Gina, the fisherman, the vagabond… Entangled fragments of life, which make the heart beat of this unlikely place and give these 24 dense, nervous, vertiginous short stories, a dimension of burst novel.

Reviews
“An endearing "romanouvelles" – Novel by short stories. Novel, because characters from the twenty-four flash-stories circulate from one to the other. But also short stories, that can be read in isolation, even in the order we want. A choice left by a writer for whom freedom has no price, for without freedom, to live is to fade. Unit of time and place: the scenes take place in July, day or night, in a dump on "the banks of the canal, on the borders of Brussels". And unity of action, led by beings whose thorns scratched the heart, and who, within this cemetery of objects – heavy of past, light of future – cross there or are exhibited there, desire or tear themselves. Here, one doesn’t roll neither on gold nor on garbage, in the shadow of a heap of car wrecks that tan in the sun before the rain rust it. Or that the snow armor it. A place bathed in melancholy, where in the containers one dreams without sleeping. Evelyne Wilwerth had never yet manifested such tenderness for her characters, expressed such sincere empathy. Her sequences are as many photos of a film in black and white […] Written with a sure style, sensual to perfection, by an eagle-clawed dove, these stories seduce by their sometimes Verlainean musicality as well as by their suggestive power. "The purple raincoat", for example, is a real jewel whose fall bewitches. The most moving and even the most troubling of Evelyne Wilwerth’s "novels" ” (Francis Matthys, La Libre Belgique.)
