The quest for an effective malaria vaccine started in 1973 with a proof-of-concept study in humans protected after vaccination with whole sporozoites via mosquito bites from irradiated, infected mosquitoes. In subsequent years, however, progress has been less than anticipated. In this book of nine chapters, international expert authors review the current status of malaria vaccine development and provide some explanations as to why the progress has been somewhat disappointing. They present various improved or alternate strategies that could lead to an enhanced global collaboration and the eventual availability of an efficacious, cost-effective malaria vaccine for use in African children
