The Shanghai-style qipao, stating to flourish in the 1920s and 1930s, not only absorbed and combined the practical elements of Manchu and Han costumes, but also jointly reflected the aesthetic concepts of Chinese and Western costumes. In modern Shanghai, the once “Paris of the East”, urban women, regardless of socialites, celebrities, or schoolgirls, female workers, more or less wore their own qipao as a way of expressing their graceful taste and their pursuing of modern life and freedom.
