Cycads live underground drinking from tree roots, and every 17 years emerge to mate, lay eggs and die. The song - the stridulation - of the males is thunderous, as loud as a vacuum cleaner, and multiplied by millions results in an unbeatable, nightmarish sound. Cycads emerge in such numbers that they stop some airplanes in their tracks. Their life cycle is non-negotiable, it implies a radical transformation: that is what happens in these stories. From them emerges a portrait of the metamorphosis of body and mind, a great map of personal transformations. It is not by chance that in Asia the cicadas are considered the symbol of immortality. This book is just that.
