Kaspar Hauser’s Brothers and Sisters. In search of the wild man
by P. J. Blumenthal
Description
What makes human beings human? Is it a life in society that makes us what we are? We often hear stories of persons who have survived in the wild without social contact or who were supposedly raised by wild animals. Kaspar Hauser is probably the most well-known example, but certainly not the only one. P. J. Blumenthal has taken up the hunt for the “wild man” Homo ferus on the boundary between man and animal.

"Kaspar Hausers Geschwister - auf der Suche nach dem wilden Menschen" (literally: "Kaspar Hauser's Siblings - in search of feral man"), published by Franz Steiner Verlag in Stuttgart, is a detailed study of an unusual fate that plays out at the far edge of human experience: the effect of extreme isolation on the human psyche, its main focus being the very young. Knowledge about homo ferus remains a useful tool for defining our place as a species in the world. The book also tackles a question, popular since antiquity: Can young humans find surrogate parents in the animal world?
"Kaspar Hausers Geschwister" is divided into two main sections. Part one describes the phenomenon of feral existence from various perspectives: historical, anthropological, psychological and sociological. Part two presents detailed analyses of around 120 case studies recorded from the 6th century A.D. to 2017, thus presenting the largest compendium of case studies ever in this field. A brief third part offers some conclusions.
In an earlier incarnation (2003), this book reached rank 50 at Amazon.de. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated.
