Journey to the West (revised edition)
by Wu Cheng’en (Ming Dynasty)
Description
As one of the four great classics in ancient China, the Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, is based on the fact that the eminent monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty went on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures. The novel creates the brave and loyal Monkey King, the pedantic Tang Sanzang, the gluttonous and lazy Zhu Bajie, and the diligent Sha Wujing. The tribulation and hardships of the journey reflect the author’s dissatisfaction with real life, who exposes and criticizes the darkness of the traditional society, as well as the fatuity and ferocity of the ruling class. The novel, full of imagination, unfolds a colorful fantasy world to readers.
