I’m Probably Lost
by Sara Salar
Description
A bold narration of a secret life in a woman’s head
I’M PROBABLY LOST takes place in Tehran. It narrates a day of a middle-class woman’s life. She drives aimlessly in the streets playing with the idea of cheating on her husband. As she wanders in the city, she delves into her childhood and its odd happenings. She reviews her rough adolescence and also her platonic love for a man. And above all, she thinks of Gandom; an old friend who always seemed to be the opposite of her in terms of boldness, liveliness, and freedom of spirit, yet very much like her. The woman is now married and has a child. She is going through a great deal of emotional strain due to the abundance of memories and dilemmas. She lost touch with Gandom a long time ago and now on the verge of a rebellion begins to look for her. On the one hand, she wishes to be with another man; a man who was in love with Gandom years ago and probably has news of her now. On the other hand, norms, ethics, and even her child are giving her cold feet. What will be her decision? Where’s Gandom now and what has become of her?

Reviews
I’M PROBABLY LOST with its fluent narration is a tale of tension and suspension. It continuously offers new challenges to deal with and to stay with the heroine right to the surprising end. The novel is a lively experience of the labyrinth of human psyche, an opportunity for every woman to reconcile with her “shadow”.
I’M PROBABLY LOST is a novel which depicts one of the most important issues of the middle-class women in big cities of Iran; those who, questioning the established ethics, are driven by the desire to rebel against the norms. It is a realistic novel with two parallel stories taking place in two different periods of time. Moving between these two periods, the reader learns about the holes and defects of the life of the heroine, wondering if she has the right to turn her back on her commitment and ethics or not.
Author Biography
Sara Salar is an Iranian writer born in 1966 in Zahedan. She’s a graduate of English literature. The novel I’M PROBABLY LOST was published in 2007 and gained her a profound reputation as a successful writer in no time. This bestseller won the Hooshang Golshiri Literary Award and was nominated for Press Critics Award for the Best Book of the Year. The publishing of the book created an unprecedented wave in the Iranian literature resulting in the comparison of her novel with Zoya Pirzad’s works. But then in the midst of its triumph, the book was banned by the government of President Ahmadinejad under the pretext that it was unethical. It returned to bookstores after six years and was well received again. Salar published another novel called ‘Is it or not?’ which was banned after being reprinted a couple of times. She has some experience in writing for children and translating fiction. I’M PROBABLY LOST has been translated into Italian and German. Sara Salar is considered to be one of the most important figures of the new generation of female writers in Iran.
