The teaching of musical keys is a central concern of Heinrich Glarean’s Dodekachordon (1547). Andrea Horz traces the multi-layered cross-linkages and intertextual references that are inscribed in this musical treatise. By locating the document in a comprehensive scientific movement, and especially in the context of the humanism inspired by Erasmus, this study opens research perspectives of immediate music-historical importance. Among other things, Glarean’s teaching undergoes revaluation in the light of the church-political disputes of his time.
