Author Biography
Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah or well-known as Buya Hamka born in Nagari Sungai Batang, Agam, West Sumatra, 17 February 1908 - died in Jakarta, 24 July 1981. He is a scholar and Indonesian writer. He spends his time as a journalist, writer, and teacher. Hamka is the first chairman of Indonesian Ulama Council. He engaged in politics through Masyumi Party until the party was dissolved and was active in Muhammadiyah until the end of his life. Al-Azhar University and the National University of Malaysia awarded him honorary doctorates, while Moestopo University confirmed Hamka as a professor. His name is assigned to Muhammadiyah’s university named Hamka University. Hamka is one of Indonesian national heroes.
Hamka is listed as the most prolific Islamic writer in modern Indonesian history. His works have been reprinted many times and have been reviewed by many researchers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. His writing has graced various magazines and newspapers. His interest in languages, reading, and writing is widely reflected in his works. It is noted that in approximately 57 years, Hamka produced 84 books. In addition, Hamka also left papers concerned in history, culture, and fields of Islamic studies.
