Author Biography
About the author Woeser
Woeser was born in Lhasa in 1966 during the Cultural Revolution, and her family are from Derge, Kham in Eastern Tibet. In 1988 she graduated with a degree in Chinese literature from the Southwest College for Nationalities in Chengdu. For a long time she was on the staff of the magazine Tibetan Literature in Lhasa. Her works include Tibet Above (a poetry collection published by the Qinghai People’s Publishing House in 1999) and a collection of essays entitled A Poem Named Tibet. (The essay collection was originally entitled Notes on Tibet and published by Flower City in 2003. It was banned by the mainland authorities soon thereafter and republished by Locus in 2006.) She has also written a travelogue—Tibet: The Crimson Map (Shihying, 2003)—as well as The Crimson Map, which combines her text with numerous photos (China Tourism Publishing House, 2004).
In 2006, apart from publishing Forbidden Memories: Tibet During the Cultural Revolution, a collection of invaluable photos of Tibet during that period, she also published Tibet Remembered, a work of oral history on the same period, as well as A Poem Named Tibet, a book that is banned on the mainland. (All three were published by Locus.) In 2008 she published Invisible Tibet; and in 2009 The Snow Lion Roaring in the Year of the Mouse: A Chronicle of the Events in Tibet of 2008, which described the 2008 Tibetan unrest. These works will be translated for English, French, German, Japanese, and Korean language editions. Western academics have described Woeser as the “first Tibetan to have played the role of public intellectual in China in the sense of using modern media.” Currently a freelance writer, she thus describes her creative philosophy: “Writing is record of the journey; writing is a form of prayer; writing is a way of bearing witness.”
