Cytochrome P-450 (CYP) is an enzymatic superfamily that is involved in the oxidative metabolism of endogenous compounds and xenobiotics. Members of the CYP1, CYP2 and CYP3 family contribute to the biotransformation of xenobiotics, including therapeutic drugs and, of these, CYP2D6 is probably the most investigated. The enzyme constitutes one of the most important pharmacogenomic biomarkers in clinical practice.
