Break It to Me Gently
by Richard Bolisay
Description
As a film critic at large, Richard Bolisay has never been interested in the rigid dichotomy between good and bad, not letting movies off easy with a mere pointing of the thumb in either direction. Rather, as borne out by the reviews and festival dispatches in this collection, he burrows into each movie, teasing its furrows and breaking its codes with a forensic exhilaration in defiance of the limited purview and shallow agency typically accorded to so-called film criticism. Break It to Me Gently is a collection of essays as much as it is a collection of times, people, experiences, thoughts, sensations, places, and stories, that finds its center on Filipino film but, like most displays of youthful ambition, tries to hem in histories, tall tales, politics, memoirs, foresights, and journalism, to mimic the raptures and tensions of the period.

Reviews
“Richard Bolisay crosses the threshold from the virtual provisionality of the limitless blog to the material scarcity of permanent print, capturing in the process the verve and vibe of a Philippine cinema reinvigorated by digital culture. As a prolific online critic, he alludes to his itinerary as an ‘unpaid’ reviewer and his nostalgia for the days ‘before Facebook and Twitter,’ which intimate the challenges that serious film writers face today of a public saturated with films in a new attention economy.” / Patrick F. Campos, author of The End of National Cinema: Filipino Film at the Turn of the Century
“Belligerent, abrasive, chaotic, erudite, incisive, emotional, sometimes tender, often funny — this is the compendium of Richard Bolisay’s essays on Philippine cinema. Read as a whole, it gives the sense of a national cinema that is dense and prolific, and in its profusion is eventually triumphant. As a specific voice, Bolisay’s resonates with a voracious appetite, not just for cinema, but for language and for discourse.” / Dodo Dayao, writer and director of Violator and If You Leave
“Reading this collection allows one to appreciate the scope of Richard Bolisay’s work and feel the weight of the history it chronicles. It is an essential document of a period that’s been touted as Philippine cinema’s Third Golden Age. That it’s being published supposedly 100 years after the birth of Filipino movies only reinforces its significance as both a signing off of an epoch and a prayer for the next one.” / Erwin Romulo, former editor-in-chief of Rogue and Esquire Philippines
