Description

A long time ago, a girl named Bean lived in old-age Kyiv’s Podil. At that time, many inhabitants of the city could turn into birds or animals. Bean was a werewolf squirrel, which means she could turn into a squirrel. Once a mysterious and elusive villain, the Midnight Glutton, appeared in the city. Bean's dad, the Witcher Beth, was trying to find a way to scare away the intruder. Thus, Bean and her fairy friend Patykoslav go on a journey through the dangerous and strange neighbourhoods of Kiev to find magical herbs for the Beet. Squirrel Bean and the Midnight Glutton by Halyna Tkachuk was shortlisted for BBC Book of the Year 2019.

Author Biography

Halyna Tkachuk is a writer, literary scholar and teacher. Born in 1985 in Khmelnytsky she has been raised in the Kyiv region, where she currently lives. She studied literature at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and researched the image of the city in children’s literature. Halyna Tkachuk was an editor of the teen magazine ‘Odnoklasnyk’ (The Classmate), participated in ‘BaraBooka. The Space of the Ukrainian Children’s Book’, taught Ukrainian, literature and creative writing for junior students at an alternative school. Since 2017, she has been the inspirer and manager of the literary studio Napysator (The Scriber). Halyna Tkachuk is the author of such children’s novellas as ‘Vechirni Kramnytsi Vulytsi Voloskoyi’ (The Evening Shops of Voloska Street), ‘Bilka Kvasolya ta Opivnichnyi Pozhyraka’ (Beans the Squirrel and Midnight Glutton); picture books for the youngest readers (‘Hoydalka pid Klenom’ (The Swing under the Maple Tree), ‘Synia Korobka’ (The Blue Box), ‘Zelena Bilka’ (The Green Squirrel) and ‘Moya Naytykhisha Knyzhka’ (My Most Silent Book); collection of stories ‘Trynadtsiat Istoriy u Temriavi’ (Thirteen Stories to Tell in the Dark), as well as informative books ‘Shkoloznavstvo’ (The Science of School) and ‘Knyzhka pro Smittya’ (The Book about Garbage), written in cooperation with teenage authors.
