This third edition, revised and expanded with new chapters based on recent studies, celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the pioneering research by one of the most respected Brazilian anthropologists, and, above all, retrieves the struggle of this people to survive, resist and reinvent themselves without losing their culture.

Author Biography
Eduardo Viveiros de Castro Americanist ethnologist with research experience in Amazonia. PhD in social anthropology from UFRJ (1984). Post-doctorate at the University of Paris X (1989). Professor of ethnology at the National Museum/UFRJ since 1978. Full professor of social anthropology at UFRJ since 2012. Published around 120 papers or book chapters and ten books. Co-coordinator of the Abaeté Network of Symmetric Anthropology (NAnSi), also based at the National Museum/UFRJ.
