Author Biography
NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 1956
(Moguer, Huelva, 1881 - San Juan de Puerto Rico, 1958.)
Juan Ramón Jiménez is an essential author for poetry in the Spanish language. His aesthetic proposals mark a dividing line between the Romanticism of Espronceda and Bécquer (under whose influence he wrote his first verses), Modernism and the avant-gardes of the first decades of the 20th century. Luminous images and conceptual and symbolic depth dazzle in his poetry. Exiled in America during the 1940s and 1950s, he enriches his poetry with a cosmic and mystical dimension never seen before in the Spanish tradition. His work has been translated into numerous languages. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956 for his work as a whole, among which the lyrical prose Platero y yo stands out.
