ABSCHIED VON DER KLEINEN RAUPE (FAREWELL TO LITTLE CATERPILLAR)

by Heike Saalfrank, Eva Goede

Description

Two friends named Schmatz and Schmierle once lived on a meadow at the edge of the forest. Schmatz was a caterpillar and lived in a beautiful flower. Schmierle was a snail, and he carried his house around on his back. Every morning Schmatz impatiently shook Schmatz bedflower and called: "Get up, you sleepyhead! The sun is already in the sky. Have you at least thought about what we could do today?" And since Schmatz mostly knew an answer to this question, they had a lot of fun together. Until one day Schmatz rattled the flower in vain and Schmatz was gone ...

Reviews

"This book is meant to help children cope with grief. Sometimes you know the pain Schmierle has when you have lost a loved one yourself. Death is carefully explained and the hope that there is a new beginning in every end.

I find it a comforting picture, that death is not final, but only a metamorphosis, and how could this be better explained than with the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Even the caterpillar has to leave everything it has loved, because its life on the ground is over, but a life in the sky begins. She gets wings and can fly and see everything with different eyes.

Maybe children will ask why when turned into a butterfly Schmatz doesn't fly to Schmierle and tell him that she has now become a butterfly. If there had been a poetic answer to that, the book would be perfect.

So it still leaves questions unanswered that I, as an educator, don't know how to answer, and that's the only reason I'm deducting half a star. But that is whining on a very high level.

I can recommend this book with its lovingly painted pictures and the appealing and comforting story for children in their final year of kindergarten and for elementary school students."
