A Green Legend: Saihanba
by Yang Yunqian, Wang Yuncong
Description
Saihanba forest farm covers an area of 92,000 hectares. Due to excessive logging, the land was barren in the 1950s, making the sand dust from the northern desert into Beijing. In 1962, hundreds of foresters began to plant trees on this land. Three generations of forest people continued to struggle to increase the forest coverage rate from 11.4% to 80%. Afforestation in the desert, planting green in the concept, and having fun in hardship. The efforts and efforts made by generations of Saihanba for more than 50 years are undoubtedly admirable. The conditions here are hard and far away from the prosperity. People settle down here and perfectly combine their personal career with collective achievements. The small efforts of each individual finally bring about great changes in Saihanba. Once "high, far and cold", Saihanba has now become a "green, beautiful, fragrant" North China emerald. Saihanba people are not only trees, but also convey a kind of faith and spirit. What they create is not only a beautiful kaolin, but also a spiritual highland admired by people. This book, in chronological order, has witnessed the great changes of Saihanba from desert to oasis with pictures, and also witnessed the "Saihanba spirit" of generations of forest farm people. This is a rare excellent book to tell the Chinese story to foreign audience with the character story.
