Race, bordering and disobedient knowledge
Activism and everyday struggles in Europe
by Suvi Keskinen, Aminkeng Atabong Alemanji, Minna Seikkula
Developing the concept of 'disobedient knowledge', this book provides new perspectives on activism and everyday struggles against racism and bordering. Drawing on empirical material from distinct contexts in Northern, Western and Southern Europe, the chapters explore how different kinds of (b)orders are challenged and possibly also maintained in everyday antiracism, activism and struggles against borders. The book examines resistance and disobedience in relation to borders, social orders, conventional practices and hegemonic discourses. It underscores the importance of studying racism and bordering as intertwined phenomena. With a focus on the historical layers of resistance, disobedient practices and ways of building shared struggles, the book provides invaluable knowledge about postcolonial Europe and its future possibilities.

Transmodern
An art history of contact, 1920–60
by Christian Kravagna, Marsha Meskimmon, Amelia Jones,
How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.

The ethics of researching the far right
Critical approaches and reflections
by Antonia Vaughan, Joan Braune, Meghan Tinsley, Aurelien Mondon
At a time when far, radical, and extreme-right politics are becoming increasingly mainstream globally - sometimes with deadly consequences - research in these fields is essential to understand the most effective ways to combat these dangerous ideologies. Yet engaging with texts and movements that do physical and verbal violence raises a number of urgent ethical issues. Until recently, this has remained understudied, as scholarship on the far right rarely delves explicitly and critically into the ethics of research. This book seeks to remedy this significant gap in an otherwise extensive and growing literature. Originating from a workshop series in 2020, in which an international group of academics at various career stages shared the ethical challenges and best practices they had developed in their research, this edited collection draws together insights from these ongoing conversations, offering urgent critical reflections on key ethical issues.

Seeing With Poetic Eyes
Critical Race Theory and Moving from Liberal to Critical Forms of Race Research in Sociology of Education
by Blaisdell, B.
“Seeing with poetic eyes” is a phrase used by a teacher to describe one of his students, a teenager who could recognize the disconnect between U.S. society’s claims about racial equity and its actual commitment towards that equity. As a teacher, he saw it as his mission to help all of his students see the world in such a critical way with that hope that they would be motivated to pursue antiracism more actively in their lives. In this book, I discuss how critical race theory (CRT) can motivate research on race in sociology of education in a similar way. Specifically, I describe how CRT helped me work with seven white teachers on developing more critical understandings of race. In my ethnographic interviews with these teachers, the analytical tools of CRT gave me a way to openly dialogue with them about issues of race in education. I was able to not only learn from the teachers but also work with them on developing racial awareness. Instead of relying on more liberal forms of sociological research—where the researcher extracts data from participants—CRT helped me promote a more critical approach, one where the researcher and participants work together to actively pursue antiracism in the research act itself. So “seeing with poetic eyes” refers the way that I have come to view research as a means of antiracism. Similarly, I propose that CRT can promote such a critical approach to research on race in the field of sociology of education.

LESSONS IN LOVE AND OTHER CRIMES
by Elizabeth Chakrabarty
A heart-breaking and hopeful debut novel inspired by the author’s own experiences of the most quotidian of crimes, race hate crimes. Seamlessly integrates elements of creative non-fiction and crime fiction within a page-turning story of love, healing and hope. Exploring queer love, loneliness and the insidious nature of hate, this is a compulsive read, bookended by personal essays from the author. Perfect for fans of Louise Doughty, Bernardine Evaristo, Claudia Rankine, and Sophie Ward. Tesya has reasons to feel hopeful after leaving her last job, where she was subjected to a series of anonymous hate crimes. Now she is back home in London to start a new position, and has begun an exciting love affair with the enigmatic Holly. But this idyllic new start quickly sours. Tesya finds herself victimized again at work by an unknown assailant, who subjects her to an insidious, sustained race hate crime. As her paranoia mounts, Tesya finds herself yearning for the most elemental of desires: love, acceptance, and sanctuary. Her assailant, meanwhile, is recording his manifesto, and plotting his next steps.

Joey et le mystère des Manteaux noirs
by Rémi Vidal
After Joey’s strange story, a new rock’n roll adventure, in which we meet again - or we discover - the Rex Pistols (Joey and his gang) who, this time, get to know the Jack Panters, a gang from the country of Black Coats, for better and for worse! In this very urban “audio show” with its biting language, the heady rock songs rhythm the story and the message is clear : to lead a perfect street dog life, the basis, that’s … friendship !! With Joey, once again, prejudices have a hard time : everyone has his chance! The chapters of the story (which includes the songs) are followed by the songs alone (maybe … to have a party in the garage ;-)). Inside the cover, there is a download code of the digital version, the lyrics of the songs and a map on which you can follow the different places of the story
